Apply Operating System Updates

The reminders about updates can be annoying, but they are important. Windows updates really do fix vulnerabilities and are worth doing. About once a month, check to make sure the critical updates for Windows are applied.

Remove Software You Don't Use

If you installed a game that you don't play or a trial of software that you decided not to buy, remove it using Programs and Features. Installed software can be slowing down your computer even if you are not actively using it.

Make Sure Your Documents Are In More Than One Place

Backup. An easy way to think of it is that anything important to you should be in at least two places, if not more. Use cloud storage or sync services.

  • Paid backup services
  • Cloud Storage like Dropbox or Google Drive
  • Sync services like Bittorrent Sync (if you don't want your data on the cloud)
